While comparing Plumbing with HVAC, let’s make clear what is Plumbing and HVAC. A plumber is a person who works on the pipes, and the process/act is called Plumbing. On the other hand, HVAC is a system wherein a specialist handles every air conditioning and heating problems as well as needs. The difference between the two is vast and complex at the same time.

1. Income

Income source is the most important aspect in any field. Nowadays, with the increase in demand for Plumber, HVAC technician, Electrician, etc. the income rate is also increasing. For these jobs, the annual pay is above $45,000 average. There might be minor variation but not more. A plumber in the US earns an average yearly salary of $50,620. While HVAC technicians earn an average annual salary of $45,110.

Bottom Line: Plumbing is considered as the highest source of income than HVAC.

2. Type of Coursework needed to prepare

In the US or any other country, if you have a certified degree and coursework done, you can quickly get into the field and run your hands through. Similarly, for Plumbing and HVAC, there are specific coursework one needs to prepare. Those are as below:

For Plumbing:
  • Diploma in Plumbing
  • Air, Water and Steam concepts should be clear
  • Thorough with Plumbing Codes
  • Firm in installing and testing Plumbing
  • Should know about the drain and waste systems
For HVAC Technician:
  • Complete knowledge of Electrical concepts
  • Knowledge of Air conditioning
  • Knowledge of Heatingplumber
  • Duct systems
  • Reading Blueprints
  • Hands firm in Soldering, Welding, and sheet metal fabrication

Bottom Line: It is all about your preference and interest in the field. If you are good at Plumbing, do the proper certification coursework. If you are good at techniques, do the HVAC certified coursework

3. Licensing Requirement

For Plumbing:

There is a licensing procedure to be taken for Plumbers. There are Forty-four states that require a license for Plumbing. Licensing for plumbers may need education proof, absolute no. of work hours experience, or any other exam before getting a permit.  

For HVAC technician:

HAVCSimilarly, for HVAC technicians, there are also licensing procedure. It requires education proof, certain no. of work hours experience, or any other exam before getting a license.  

Bottom Line: Both these fields require a license, but it varies from state to state.

So, this was a clear difference between Plumbing and HVAC technician. If you want to earn well and have an interest, both of these fields are perfect and high salaried. But if we need to choose one among the two, I will select Plumbing, as it has a higher wage rate and also the need for it is more as compared to HVAC. Also, no. of jobs are more available in Plumbing than HVAC.
